Milam County hurricane guide

Milam County Emergency Management works under the direction of the County Judge and is based at the courthouse in Cameron. The county is far from the coast, but tropical storms that move inland can bring heavy rain, flooding, and tornadoes. In 2026 the county declared local disasters for June flooding and January winter weather. Sign up for Everbridge alerts and never drive through flooded roads.

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Milam County does not publish a shelter list. If shelters are needed, officials announce them for each emergency. Do not go to a site until officials announce it is open. Watch Everbridge alerts and the county website.

Help to evacuate

  • State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR): Milam County asks people with disabilities, people who are medically fragile, people with functional needs, and people who need a ride to evacuate to register with STEAR, a free state registry. Register online at stear.texas.gov or call 2-1-1 and press option 4. Website.
