  • The provincial meteorological center says August, September, and October are the months when cyclones most often hit Ciego de Ávila, and that the province is affected by one about every four years on average. Hurricane Irma damaged Cayo Coco in 2017.

Evacuation centers in Cuba are organized by the Consejo de Defensa and the Defensa Civil for each storm. A center is open only when officials announce it. If you live on the coast or in a flood prone area, follow the instructions of your Consejo de Defensa and local authorities on when and where to go.
