Louisiana hurricane guide

Louisiana's Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) coordinates the state's hurricane response, but evacuation orders come from each parish. Start with your parish page, and use these statewide services for shelter information, insurance, price gouging, and disaster benefits. For help at any hour, dial 211 from anywhere in Louisiana.

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. In a life threatening emergency, call 911.

Parishes

Choose your parish. Louisiana has parishes instead of counties. Each parish page has its emergency numbers, evacuation zones, and shelters, and lists its cities and towns.

More places are on the way. Until yours is listed, see the official sources page or call 211.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Shelters open only when officials announce them, and they are not opened in areas in the predicted path of a storm. For state shelter information, text LASHELTER to 898211 or call 211, or ask your parish emergency preparedness office. Shelter information points may also be set up along evacuation routes. Service animals are allowed in all shelters, but pets may not be, so call 211 before you go.
