Nord-Est hurricane guide

The Nord-Est is a coastal department in northeastern Haiti, on the border with the Dominican Republic, with its capital at Fort-Liberté. Civil protection here is run by the Direction départementale de la Protection civile du Nord-Est, the department's office of the national Direction Générale de la Protection Civile (DGPC). Heavy rain can bring flash floods, especially in areas that often flood. Follow DGPC and Unité Hydrométéorologique d'Haïti announcements for each storm.

Checked on October 3, 2026

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from the Direction départementale de la Protection civile du Nord-Est. In a life threatening emergency, call 114 for police, 115 for fire, or 116 for an ambulance.

What to know in Nord-Est

  • The DGPC lists its local office (antenne) for the Nord-Est at the entrance to the town of Fort-Liberté (Zone Bas Fond Limite).
  • On April 22, 2026, the DGPC put the Nord, Nord-Est, and Nord-Ouest departments under a yellow alert for heavy rain from a cold front, after the weather service warned that saturated ground could bring flash floods. It asked people in areas that often flood to follow the authorities' instructions.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Official sites do not publish a shelter list for the Nord-Est department. The DGPC manages temporary shelters during disasters. Go to a shelter only when civil protection or local officials announce that it is open, and follow DGPC announcements for each storm.
