Hato Mayor hurricane guide

Hato Mayor is a province in the east, with its capital in Hato Mayor del Rey and the coastal town of Sabana de la Mar on the Bay of Samaná. Defensa Civil's provincial office is in Hato Mayor del Rey, and the national Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE) issues alert levels for the province. The government declared an emergency in Hato Mayor after Hurricane Fiona in 2022. Follow COE and Defensa Civil announcements for each storm.

Defensa Civil's 2020 national shelter inventory lists 41 validated shelters in Hato Mayor, mostly schools and churches, with room for about 13,990 people. It is a planning list, not a list of open shelters. A shelter is open only when officials announce it, so follow COE and Defensa Civil announcements before you go.
