Barbados hurricane guide¶
The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) coordinates Barbados's National Emergency Management System, which includes 30 District Emergency Organisations run by community volunteers. The Barbados Meteorological Services provides forecasts and weather information for the island. DEM says the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and people along the coast should be alert for storm surge.
Checked on October 3, 2026
Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from the Department of Emergency Management (DEM). In a life threatening emergency, call 211 for police, 311 for fire, or 511 for an ambulance.
What to know in Barbados¶
- DEM says a national emergency shelter should be your last resort. Arrange ahead of time to stay with family or friends if you have to leave home.
- The Fire Service Dispatch Centre answers 311 around the clock and can pass calls to the police, the ambulance service, the Barbados Defence Force, Barbados Light & Power, the Barbados Water Authority, and DEM.

Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
Emergency shelters open only when DEM announces them, so go to a shelter only after officials say shelters are open. When they open, the list is published in the local media and on the social media of DEM, the Ministry of Educational Transformation, and the Barbados Government Information Service, and you can also call DEM at 246-438-7575. Category 1 shelters may be used during a hurricane, and Category 2 shelters may be used afterward if they are still in reasonable condition. Pets are not allowed, food and bedding are not provided, and 14 shelters have a bathroom suitable for wheelchair users.
