Cienfuegos hurricane guide

Cienfuegos is on Cuba's south coast, around the Bay of Cienfuegos. The Consejo de Defensa Provincial, together with the Defensa Civil, directs storm preparation and evacuation. People who live below dams and in other flood prone places have been evacuated before past storms, and low coastal areas can flood. Follow the instructions of the Consejo de Defensa and the Defensa Civil for each storm.

What to know in Cienfuegos

  • Before Hurricane Ian in September 2022, the governor reported more than 1,700 people evacuated, mostly residents living downstream of dams and in other places that could flood.
  • For Hurricane Elsa on July 4, 2021, Cienfuegos was placed in the Fase de Alarma (cyclone alarm phase).

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Consejo de Defensa and the Defensa Civil organize evacuation before a storm. In past storms most people who left their homes stayed with family and friends, and others went to evacuation centers. Evacuation centers are not listed here, and none is open until officials announce it. If you live in a low area, near the coast, or below a dam, follow the evacuation instructions of your local Consejo de Defensa.

Power, water and debris

  • Empresa Eléctrica Cienfuegos (electricity): Commercial office at Avenida 58 No. 3512 in the city of Cienfuegos. Office line; the Unión Eléctrica lists every municipal office and its phone.
