San Juan-Laventille hurricane guide¶
The San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation covers north Trinidad from Maracas, Las Cuevas, and La Fillette on the north coast to St. Ann's, Cascade, and Beetham in the west and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary in the south. Its Disaster Management Unit (DMU) works with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) on storms, floods, and fallen trees. Heavy rain can bring flooding in low areas and landslides on the hillsides, so follow ODPM and corporation announcements for each storm.

What to know in San Juan-Laventille¶
- The DMU responds to complaints about trees that threaten homes and property, and does damage assessments after a storm.
- In the late 2022 floods, the DMU responded to flooding in areas including Warner Village and El Socorro South.

Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
Emergency shelters in Trinidad open only after the corporation's CEO issues an official activation order, and each building is inspected and stocked first. Do not go to a shelter until it is announced as open. The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government publishes a map of designated shelter locations in Trinidad, with 22 in the San Juan/Laventille area, for planning only. Call the DMU hotline or follow ODPM and corporation announcements to find out which shelters are open.
