Use this site offline¶
Hurricane Guide is built to keep working when the internet does not. This page explains what happens automatically, how to install the site as an app, and what to do before a storm so the guides are ready when you need them.
What happens automatically¶
The first time you open this site with a connection, your browser saves a copy of every page in the language you are reading. It happens in the background and takes a few seconds on a normal connection. After that, the site opens even in airplane mode, and searching still works.
Checking whether this guide is saved on your device.
Each time you visit with a connection, the saved copy is refreshed. Pages you open while online always come from the live site, so you never read something out of date by accident.
Do this before a storm
Open the site once while you still have a good connection, wait for the message above to say the guide is saved, and then add it to your home screen. That is all it takes.
Install it as an app¶
Installing puts an icon on your home screen and opens the guide full screen, without browser buttons. It is the same site, saved on your device.
iPhone and iPad (Safari)
- Open this site in Safari.
- Tap the Share button, the square with an arrow pointing up.
- Scroll down and tap "Add to Home Screen".
- Tap "Add" in the top right corner.
Android (Chrome)
- Open this site in Chrome.
- Tap the three dot menu in the top right corner.
- Tap "Add to Home screen" or "Install app".
- Tap "Install".
Desktop (Chrome or Edge)
- Look for the install icon at the right end of the address bar.
- Click it and confirm.
Other ways to keep this information¶
- Print the checklists. The printable checklists page is designed to print on a few pages. Keep a copy with your supplies.
- Save a PDF. In your browser's print dialog, choose "Save as PDF" on any page.
- Share the link. Text the address hurricane.guide to family and neighbors before the season so they have it too.
What the site stores on your device¶
The site stores copies of its own pages and the state of any checklist boxes you tick. It does not collect personal information, use tracking cookies, or send anything to a server. Clearing your browser data removes the saved copy; open the site again while online to save it again.
If the offline copy stops working¶
- Open the site while you have a connection and wait a moment. It repairs itself.
- Make sure you are not in a private browsing window. Private windows do not keep saved sites.
- If your phone is very low on storage, the browser may remove saved sites. Free up some space and open the site again.
