Tamil Nadu cyclone guide

Tamil Nadu has a long Bay of Bengal coast and receives much of its rain, and many of its cyclones, during the northeast monsoon from October to December. The state runs a State Control Room on the toll free number 1070, and each district collectorate runs a district emergency operations centre on 1077. The coast and low lying areas, including Chennai, are exposed to cyclone wind, storm surge, and flooding. Follow warnings from the India Meteorological Department and instructions from the state and your district collector.

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

This page does not list shelters. A cyclone relief centre or shelter is open only when officials announce it. Call 1077 or contact your district collectorate to learn which shelter serves your area, and follow instructions from your district collector and local officials.
