Westmoreland hurricane guide

The Westmoreland Municipal Corporation, based in Savanna-la-Mar, is the local government for the parish of Westmoreland. Its Parish Disaster Coordinator plans for local emergencies with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). ODPEM lists Savanna-la-Mar, Negril, Bluefields, Little London, Frome, and other low areas as high risk for flooding. Follow ODPEM, the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, and corporation announcements for each storm.

What to know in Westmoreland

  • Westmoreland was among the parishes worst hit by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. In December 2025, it still had more people in shelters than any other parish: 479 people in 30 shelters.
  • ODPEM's high risk list for Westmoreland names Big Bridge, Bluefields, Frome, McNeil Lands, Little London, the Savanna-la-Mar business area, Negril, and Three Miles River, all for flooding. If you live in one of these areas, plan where you will go before a storm.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

ODPEM publishes a Westmoreland shelter list with 66 shelters, mostly schools, and the areas each one serves. It is a planning list, not a list of open shelters. A shelter is open only when officials announce it, so follow ODPEM and corporation announcements or call the parish disaster office before you go.
