Saba hurricane guide

Saba is a special municipality (public entity) of the Netherlands. The Public Entity Saba runs disaster response through a Disaster Management Team chaired by the Island Governor, with the police, fire department, public works, public health, and the ports. KNMI, the Dutch weather service, issues forecasts and warnings for Saba. Saba lies in the hurricane belt, and Meteo Curaçao says hurricane conditions reach these islands about once every four to five years.

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from the Public Entity Saba and its Disaster Management Team. In a life threatening emergency, call 911.

What to know in Saba

  • The power is turned off for safety reasons during a hurricane. Analog house phones still work when the power and internet are down, but cordless phones do not.
  • If normal communication is down, emergency services use loudspeakers to broadcast important messages through the villages. If a curfew is set, the Governor announces its timing before the storm.
  • Hurricane Georges passed directly over Saba and St. Eustatius on September 21, 1998. Meteo Curaçao recorded a gust of 263 km/h (163 mph) on Saba.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Shelters open only when officials announce them. The Public Entity Saba names two storm shelters: Sunny Valley Youth Center in The Bottom and Child Focus Foundation in Windward Side. They are a last resort for short stays by people who cannot stay at home or with family or friends, and space is limited. Bring your own food, water, medication, ID, and a charged phone. Pets, alcohol, and tobacco are not allowed. Keep enough food and supplies at home for at least 10 days during hurricane season.
