Duarte hurricane guide¶

Duarte is an inland province in the northeast Cibao region of the Dominican Republic, with its capital at San Francisco de Macorís, and the Yuna River runs through it. Defensa Civil runs a provincial office in San Francisco de Macorís, and the national Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE) sets green, yellow, and red alert levels for each province. River flooding has cut off communities and flooded hundreds of homes in past storms, so follow COE and Defensa Civil announcements for each storm. 9-1-1 coverage is extended municipality by municipality, so check the national page to see whether it serves your area.

Always follow instructions from the Defensa Civil provincial office in Duarte. In a life threatening emergency, call 911 where the 9-1-1 system covers your area. Evacuation centers¶

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Defensa Civil's national list of validated shelters, from 2020, has a section for Duarte with each shelter's municipality and name. It is a planning list, not a list of open shelters, and it is several years old. A shelter is open only when officials announce it, so call the Defensa Civil provincial office or follow COE and Defensa Civil announcements before you go.
