Tete cyclone guide

Tete is an inland province in north-western Mozambique, crossed by the Zambezi river. The national disaster institute INGD works in the province through its provincial delegation, and INAM, the national weather service, has a provincial office in Tete. INGD's reports describe Idai in 2019 and Freddy in 2023 reaching the province. Follow INGD, INAM, and your local authorities for warnings.

  • Cyclone Idai, March 2019. INGD's 2018 to 2019 report says Idai severely affected Sofala, Manica, and Tete.
  • Cyclone Freddy, March 2023. INGD's 2022 to 2023 report says Freddy affected Tete with flooding after it came ashore in Zambézia. Its table records 101,407 people affected in Tete.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

INGD's contingency plan lists evacuation of the population to temporary accommodation centres (centros de acomodação temporária) among the planned responses, and does not publish a list of centres. Follow INGD, INAM, and your local authorities for where to go.
