Veracruz hurricane guide

Veracruz is a long Gulf coast state in eastern Mexico. The Secretaría de Protección Civil (SPC), based in Xalapa, is the state civil protection office. The coast and the rivers that run down from the mountains to the Gulf are exposed to cyclone wind, storm surge, river flooding, and landslides. Follow the warnings of the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional and the instructions of state and municipal Protección Civil.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Veracruz asks residents to find their nearest temporary shelter (refugio temporal) and the route to it before a storm. Shelters are run by municipalities under state and federal guidelines. The state publishes a list of shelters, linked here as a planning list only. A shelter is open only when officials announce it. Follow Protección Civil and your municipal civil protection unit.
