Bermuda hurricane guide

The Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO), part of the Ministry of National Security and chaired by the Minister of National Security, prepares government and other agencies for hurricanes and coordinates emergency response and recovery. The Bermuda Weather Service is the authoritative source of weather information for Bermuda and issues the official watches and warnings. When a hurricane is imminent, the Government's Emergency Broadcast Station goes live on 100.1 FM. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the Government says the peak usually runs from mid-August through October.

Checked on October 3, 2026

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO). In a life threatening emergency, call 911 for police, fire, ambulance, or marine rescue.

What to know in Bermuda

  • When a warning is issued, storm conditions are expected within 36 hours. The Government says to follow all official guidance without delay and not to rely on rumours or social media.
  • Do not go outside if the eye of a storm passes over Bermuda. The wind drops, but the storm is still active. Stay indoors until emergency services say it is safe to move around the island.
  • During Hurricane Imelda in October 2025, the EMO opened an Operations Centre hotline at 441-444-1447, opened CedarBridge Academy as the Government shelter, and closed the Causeway. Listen to 100.1 FM for the hotline and measures in effect for each storm.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The emergency shelter opens only when officials announce it, through the local media and the Emergency Broadcast Station on 100.1 FM. Cedarbridge Academy is the one approved pre-hurricane shelter. The EMO may also open other school and church sites, depending on the disaster. If the EMO decides an area is at high risk, it will tell people through the media to leave. Bring your own food and water for three to four days, medicines, bedding, a radio, and important papers. Pets are not allowed in the shelter.
