What to know in Eastern Visayas (Region VIII)¶
- PAGASA's 2016 presentation calls Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), 6-9 November 2013, the most devastating typhoon in Philippine history. It lists storm surge of 5 to 6 m at Tacloban-Palo, Leyte and Basey, Samar, and 6 to 7 m at Guiuan-Hernani, Eastern Samar, and a death toll of 6,268 citing the NDRRMC. Its observed data lists Guiuan, Eastern Samar with 160 kph sustained winds and 195 kph gusts.
- PAGASA says storm surge is the abnormal rise in sea level during a tropical cyclone, and that it becomes more dangerous when it arrives on top of a high tide. It advises people in storm surge prone areas to prepare to evacuate as soon as the municipal disaster council or barangay officials advise it.
