Sofia cyclone guide

Sofia is a region of Madagascar. The Bureau National de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes (BNGRC) is the national agency for risk and disaster management, and BNGRC pages refer to regional Comités Régionaux de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes (CRGRC) that work with it. This page does not have a confirmed regional office name, regional contact number, or regional government website for Sofia on an official page, so the contacts below are the national BNGRC lines. Météo Madagascar issues the cyclone alert levels (alerte verte, jaune, rouge, and bleue). Storms here are tropical cyclones. Follow Météo Madagascar and BNGRC and the instructions of local authorities.

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from Bureau National de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes (BNGRC), with the regional Comité Régional de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes. In an emergency, call 17 for the police, 119 for the gendarmerie, or 118 for fire from a mobile phone.

What to know in Sofia

  • On 8 October 2026 BNGRC and Météo Madagascar reported a two day workshop in Mahajanga on improving early warning systems for the Boeny and Sofia regions, including the inclusion of people with disabilities. BNGRC calls the two regions particularly vulnerable to natural hazards.
  • Past event: BNGRC's provisional report of 5 February 2026 on Cyclone Fytia lists Sofia among 9 regions and 37 districts that suffered damage. The report gives totals for all regions together, not for Sofia alone.
  • Météo Madagascar's cyclone alert system has four levels: alerte verte (2 to 5 days before impact), alerte jaune (48 to 24 hours), alerte rouge (12 hours), and alerte bleue (the phenomenon is moving away but dangers remain locally). Under the red alert it says to stay inside a safe building and not to go out.
