Mozambique cyclone guide

The Instituto Nacional de Gestão e Redução do Risco de Desastres (INGD) coordinates disaster risk management and the response to emergencies in Mozambique, and it coordinates the Centro Nacional Operativo de Emergência (CENOE), the national emergency operations centre in Maputo. The Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia de Moçambique (INAM) is the national weather service and issues weather warnings. Storms here are tropical cyclones, and the government calls the rainy and cyclone season the época chuvosa e ciclónica. Mozambique is on this one page.

Checked on October 10, 2026

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from the Instituto Nacional de Gestão e Redução do Risco de Desastres (INGD). In an emergency, call 119 for the police or 198 for fire. The UK government's travel advice also lists 112 for ambulance, fire, and police.

What to know in Mozambique

  • INGD's annual contingency plan for 2025 to 2026 records that 15 tropical systems formed in the south-west Indian Ocean during the 2024 to 2025 rainy season and that three tropical cyclones reached the Mozambican coast: Chido in December 2024, Dikeledi in January 2025, and Jude in March 2025. This is a past event as the plan describes it.
  • INGD's 2025 to 2026 plan says the 2024 to 2025 season created a cumulative human impact of 2,426,901 people affected, 522,534 families, and 326 deaths, counting all hazards together and not only cyclones.
  • INGD calls the annual contingency plan the Government's main planning tool for multisectoral emergency response. On 21 September 2026 INGD began consolidating the plan for the 2026 to 2027 rainy and cyclone season in Matutuine District, Maputo Province.
  • INAM's public weather warning (Aviso Meteorológico para o Público) is the product that tells people about imminent significant weather such as heavy rain, strong wind, thunderstorms, cyclones, or heat waves, with the areas at risk and recommended precautions. INAM says it uses a colour system for wind and cyclone warnings.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

INGD's contingency plan describes temporary accommodation centres (centros de acomodação temporária) where families are moved during emergencies, with food assistance provided there. The plan does not give a public list of centres. Follow INGD, INAM, and your local authorities for where to go.

Radio, TV and weather

Keep a battery or hand crank radio. When power and cell service fail, radio is often the only way to hear official updates.
