Perquimans County hurricane guide

Perquimans County Emergency Services, through its Emergency Management Division, plans for disasters and coordinates the county's response and relief, including a water rescue team. The county lies along the Perquimans River and Albemarle Sound, and the land along the river, the sound, and the creeks is in Zone A, the area at greatest risk from storm surge and flooding. Sign up for CodeRED alerts and know your zone before a storm.

Evacuation zones

Perquimans County has two evacuation zones. Zone A, the area most at risk, covers the low land along the Perquimans River, the Albemarle Sound shore, and the creeks. Zone B covers the rest of the county. Zone A is usually ordered to leave first. County officials decide which zones must evacuate. The county's Know Your Zone map shows both zones.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Perquimans County does not publish a list of shelters on its website. Do not go to a shelter until officials announce that it is open, and watch CodeRED alerts and local news. If you go, bring bedding, clothing, medicines, your emergency kit, and a favorite comfort item for each child. Alcohol, illegal drugs, and weapons are not allowed.
