Nicholas County hurricane guide¶
Nicholas County Homeland Security and Emergency Management works with the county 911 center and runs the county's Nixle alert system. Nicholas County is inland and mountainous, along the Gauley and Cherry rivers, so heavy rain, including rain from the remains of tropical storms, can bring flash flooding and landslides.

Official alerts and information¶
- Nixle Community Notification System: Nicholas County uses Nixle to send local emergency alerts and advisories. The page links the signup. Website.
Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
Nicholas County does not publish a standing list of storm shelters that we could confirm. Shelters open only when officials announce them, so do not go to a site until it is announced as open. Check county alerts and local news for announcements.
Cities and towns¶
Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
