Pittsylvania County hurricane guide

The Pittsylvania County Public Safety Department coordinates emergency management for the county, which is Virginia's largest locality by area and mostly rural, and it runs the county's 911 center and citizen notification system. Pittsylvania is inland on the Dan River, so the main tropical storm risks are heavy rain, flooding of creeks and rivers, wind, and power outages. Sign up for the county's emergency notifications, which can include severe weather warnings for flash floods.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Pittsylvania County pages checked do not list hurricane shelters. If the county opens a shelter for a storm, expect it to be announced through the county's emergency notifications. Do not go anywhere until it is announced. You can call Public Safety at 434-432-7920 on a weekday to ask what the county plans.

Cities and towns

Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
