Evacuation zones

Hampton is in Virginia's Know Your Zone system, which uses zones A to D. The city says officials may recommend that people in the lowest-lying areas leave voluntarily, and may order a mandatory evacuation for that zone or for the two most vulnerable zones. Look up your zone on the state Know Your Zone site by address, or call Hampton 311 at 757-727-8311 and staff can look it up. The city says it is best to leave 72 hours before landfall if possible, and that first responders will be pulled off the roads at some point in a hurricane.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

If city leaders recommend or order evacuation of one or more zones, Hampton will typically open a public shelter, and often a pet-friendly one. Which shelters open depends on storm path, flooding, and timing, and many are schools. Watch the city's alerts and Facebook page for whether and where shelters are available. The city says shelters are basic, so bring a hurricane kit, and that anyone who can stay with family or friends or in a hotel should plan to do so.
