Grayson County hurricane guide

Grayson County Emergency Services, led by the Emergency Services Coordinator, plans for disasters, runs the county Emergency Operations Center, and gives residents information on preparing for natural and man-made disasters. Grayson is a mountainous county on the North Carolina line, so the main tropical storm risk is heavy rain from storm remnants causing flash flooding along creeks and the New River, plus wind and power outages. The county pages checked do not name a current emergency alert sign-up, so ask the office which system to join.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Grayson County pages checked do not list hurricane shelters. If the county opens a shelter for a storm, expect it to be announced by the county and the Sheriff's Office. Do not go anywhere until it is announced. Call Emergency Services at 276-768-6244 on a weekday to ask what the county plans, and call 911 for emergencies.

Cities and towns

Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
