McMullen County hurricane guide¶
In McMullen County the County Judge is the Emergency Management Director, and an Emergency Management Coordinator runs the county's emergency program from Tilden. The county is far from the coast, but heavy rain upstream can send dangerous flooding down the Frio River, closing roads, low-water crossings, and bridges. Never drive through flooded roads, and follow county announcements for each storm.

What to know in McMullen County¶
- In July 2026 the County Judge declared a local state of disaster because floodwater was expected to rise along the Frio River. The declaration allowed road and bridge closures, evacuations when needed, and shelters or reception centers. This is past practice, not a promise.
- McMullen County tests its outdoor warning sirens on the first Tuesday of each month at about 10:00 a.m., weather permitting.

Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
McMullen County does not publish a shelter list. If shelters or reception centers are needed, the county announces them for each emergency. Do not go to a site until officials announce it is open.
