Brazos County hurricane guide

The Brazos County Department of Emergency Management plans for disasters together with Bryan, College Station, Kurten, Wixon Valley, and Texas A&M University, working from the shared Brazos Community Emergency Operations Center. The county is inland, but it lists hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods among its hazards, so tropical storms can bring heavy rain, flooding, and tornadoes. Keep emergency alerts turned on in your phone settings, because the county now sends alerts through the federal wireless alert system.

Checked on October 3, 2026

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from Brazos County Department of Emergency Management. In a life threatening emergency, call 911.

What to know in Brazos County

  • Brazos County's CodeRED alert system is down after a data breach at the vendor, and the county is choosing a replacement. Until then, alerts go out through FEMA's system to phones in the area, and you do not need to sign up. If you used your old CodeRED password on other accounts, the county asks you to change those passwords.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Brazos County does not post a standing list of shelters. If shelters open during a storm, the county and cities announce them, so watch for emergency alerts and updates from the Brazos Community Emergency Operations Center. The county says only service animals are allowed in Red Cross shelters, so call ahead to friends, family, or hotels outside the affected area that will take your pets. Never drive through flooded roads.
