Surfside Beach hurricane guide¶
Surfside Beach is an island community on the Gulf of Mexico, reached by a bridge, and the Village says everyone must be ready to leave before conditions make the bridge and emergency response unsafe. Storm surge, flooding, and hurricane winds are the main risks. The Village has its own police department and EMS, and its EMS Director is also the Village Emergency Management Coordinator.

What to know in Surfside Beach¶
- Ground-stored RVs, golf carts, boats, and boat trailers must be moved off the island within four hours after a hurricane watch is issued. Once a mandatory evacuation is issued, non-residents are not allowed onto the island.
- During a mandatory evacuation the Mayor may turn off water and sewer, and may ask for electric service to be turned off. Fire trucks and ambulances leave the island when winds reach 50 mph, and the rest of the emergency crews leave when storm surge begins flooding streets. Anyone who stays should expect no water, sewer, power, or emergency services.
- Re-entry may happen in phases. Do not return until officials authorize re-entry for your group. Bring identification and proof of residency, and property owners may need ownership documents, to show at a checkpoint.
