Sumter County hurricane guide¶
The Sumter County Emergency Management Office plans for and manages the county Emergency Operations Center during disasters. The county's hurricane guidance says hurricane threats include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, and tornadoes, and tells people who are not in an evacuation zone to stock supplies for several days in case they lose power and water, since flooding or blocked roads may stop them from leaving.

Sumter County did not publish a standing list of hurricane shelters on the pages checked. Shelters open only when the county announces them, so do not go to a site until it is announced. Check the county's alerts and website for open shelters.
