Atlantic Beach hurricane guide¶
Atlantic Beach is a beach town on Bogue Banks, a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Sound, reached by the high-rise bridge from Morehead City. Storm surge, flooding, and wind are the main dangers, and Bogue Banks is usually ordered to evacuate first. The town has its own police and fire departments and water system.

What to know in Atlantic Beach¶
- After a major storm, you need a town re-entry pass to cross the high-rise bridge into Atlantic Beach. Officials check the town first, then let property owners with passes return, and open the town to the public last. The NC Highway Patrol closes the bridge when winds make it unsafe.
- Property owners can get up to two free re-entry passes per parcel, and each business one. Extra passes cost $25. Get them at Town Hall, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or apply online and allow 5 business days for mailing. No passes are issued or mailed within 24 hours of projected landfall. The orange passes replaced the old green ones in 2024.
