The Salem County Office of Emergency Management, run by the Sheriff's Office, plans for floods, hurricanes, hazardous materials, and nuclear power plant incidents. It keeps a county Emergency Operations Center in Mannington, staffed around the clock for communications with municipal officials. What to know in Salem County

  • The county's Returning Home page warns not to rush back after a disaster. Check outside for downed power lines, gas lines, and foundation damage, turn off main power and water until a professional says it is safe, and assume mold if the home flooded.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Salem County pages read do not list shelters. Check county Regroup alerts and your town's emergency management office to find out whether a shelter is open before you go.
