Sullivan County hurricane guide¶
Sullivan County government has little role in emergency management in New Hampshire, because towns and cities run local emergency management under the state's Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM). Follow your town's alerts and NH Alerts. ReadyNH says hurricanes and tropical storms can bring flash flooding, downed trees and power lines, and long outages, and it says to evacuate if officials direct you to, or if you live in a mobile home or near a river or floodplain.

Every phone number and web address on this page was checked against official sources on that date. Details can change, especially during a storm. Always follow instructions from Sullivan County government and your town or city emergency management. In a life threatening emergency, call 911.
What to know in Sullivan County¶
- ReadyNH says slow moving hurricanes reaching mountainous areas tend to produce especially heavy rain that can trigger landslides, mudslides, and flash flooding. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move to higher ground right away.
Emergency and information numbers¶
| Service | Number | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency | 911 | Police, fire, and ambulance. Call only when someone's life or property is in danger. |
Official alerts and information¶
- NH Alerts: The state's emergency alert system. Sign up before a storm. Your town may also run its own alerts, so check your town site. Website.
Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
Shelters open only when officials announce them. Check NH Alerts and your town or city for shelter news before you go anywhere. ReadyNH says shelter should be planned for with your family emergency plan, and that you can text SHELTER and your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter if you cannot return home.
Cities and towns¶
Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
