Calvert County hurricane guide¶
The Calvert County Division of Emergency Management, part of the Department of Public Safety, plans for hurricanes and coordinates shelter, emergency food and water, and sandbags during and after a disaster. The county sits between the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River and says it is at risk for strong winds, heavy rain, and inland flooding. If you live in a mobile home, the county says to plan alternate shelter.

Evacuation zones¶
Maryland uses statewide Know Your Zone evacuation zones lettered A, B, and C. In a severe storm, residents of one or more zones may be told to evacuate depending on tides, storm intensity, path, and other factors, and the order names the zone. Look up your address on the state map. If your address is not in a zone, the state says you are not expected to be evacuated for the storm scenarios it mapped, but you should still follow local emergency managers. If the map will not load, the state says to call 2-1-1 or your local emergency manager. Calvert County says to use your own vehicle to evacuate and to offer rides to neighbors who have no transportation.
Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
Calvert County says that if an evacuation is recommended, reception and mass care shelters will be opened based on the incident, and that the public school system is used to shelter residents. Listen to the Emergency Alert System, Calvert County ALERT, and the Calvert Prepare mobile app for evacuation information and shelter locations. Do not go to a school until it is announced as a shelter.
