Evacuation zones

Maui County tells people to find their tsunami evacuation zone by entering an address in NOAA's tsunami evacuation map. If you are in the zone, go inland or to high ground, about 50 feet above sea level if possible. For coastal evacuations the county says orders come through sirens, the Emergency Alert System, wireless alerts, and MEMA alerts.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Maui County announces shelter openings over radio and local television, and says shelters may not open right away. Do not go to a shelter until it is announced as open, then go to the nearest open one. Bring an evacuation kit, because shelter supplies are very limited. The county says pets are allowed at most shelters if crated, so plan ahead. Visitors in hotels should follow their hotel plan.
