Sånta Rita-Sumai typhoon guide

Sånta Rita-Sumai, often written Santa Rita, is on the southwestern side of Guam. It was founded in 1945 for families moved from the destroyed village of Sumay. Guam Homeland Security and the Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) runs emergency management for the whole island, including typhoon advisories and shelter announcements, and the Mayor's Office is the local contact for village services. Follow GHS/OCD announcements before and during a typhoon.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Guam's public typhoon shelters are in public schools run by the Guam Department of Education, and they open only when the government announces them. During Typhoon Mawar in 2023, the government announced the twelve schools that opened as shelters, and only service animals were allowed, so plan now where your pets will stay. Do not go to a shelter until it is announced as open. Watch GHS/OCD and Joint Information Center announcements to learn which shelters are open.

Help to evacuate

  • Mayor's Office, Sånta Rita-Sumai (rides to shelters): During Typhoon Mawar in 2023, residents who had no reliable ride or had a disability were told to contact their village Mayor's Office, and buses to the shelters left from the Mayors' Offices.
