Camden County hurricane guide

The Camden County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) plans for hurricanes in Georgia's southernmost coastal county. Camden has four evacuation zones, A through D, from the barrier islands to everything west of I-95. As the first Georgia county on I-95 North, it sees heavy traffic from Florida evacuees, so local roads can be congested. The county says hurricane hazards are storm surge, high winds, tornadoes, and flooding.

What to know in Camden County

  • Camden County says that once an evacuation has been ordered and sustained winds reach 35 mph, public safety services cannot operate. If you stay, the county tells you to be ready for no electricity, no water, no stores or gas stations, and 7 to 10 days of supplies.
  • Re-entry after an evacuation follows the Georgia GEMA/HS statewide re-entry process. See the Re-Entry page on the county Emergency Management site.

Evacuation zones

Camden County has four evacuation zones and asks residents to leave in phases by zone. Zone A: the barrier islands, including Cumberland Island and Little Cumberland Island. Zone B: most of the county east of I-95, except Zone C and the barrier islands. Zone C: the area between I-95 and the intersection of Colerain Road, Laurel Island Parkway, and St. Marys Road. Zone D: all of Camden County west of I-95. Evacuation routes: most people use Georgia Highway 40 west into Charlton County. The county also lists I-95, US Highway 17, Georgia Highway 252 west from White Oak, Georgia Highway 259 northwest from Tarboro, and Georgia Highway 110 North northwest from Waverly. The county advises keeping a paper road map in your car and listening to the radio for closures. Open the map to look up an address.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Camden County's pages do not give a shelter list. Its Evacuation Ride Assistance Program says approved residents may be taken by school bus or Department of Corrections bus to an inland destination that is decided on the day of departure. The county says space is limited, this is a last resort, you must get yourself to the staging center at the Recreation Center, 1050 Wildcat Drive, Kingsland, and you should plan to evacuate on your own. Pets are allowed on those buses if they meet the form's requirements. Do not go to any site until the county announces it through AlertCamden.
