Perry County hurricane guide

The Perry County Emergency Management Agency in Marion coordinates emergency planning, response, and recovery for the county. Perry County is inland and has no storm surge evacuation zones, but tropical storms can still bring flooding, high winds, and tornadoes. The EMA runs storm shelters that open when severe weather threatens.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Perry County EMA owns four storm shelters for severe weather, including tornadoes: the Barnette-King Center in Marion, East Perry Daycare on County Road 64, the Uniontown Shelter on West Street, and the Pernell Shelter on Pernell Road. These are tornado shelters, not hurricane evacuation shelters. The City of Uniontown may also use the City Hall auditorium as a safe room; call Uniontown City Hall at 334-628-2011. The county website has no page of open shelters, so call the EMA office to find out which shelters are open when a storm threatens.
