What to know in Weipa Town Authority¶

The Weipa Local Disaster Management Plan names the areas of Trunding, Nanum, and Rocky Point and Golf Links as exposed to storm tide, and says storm surge mapping can be obtained from the Weipa Town Authority office.
Past events recorded in the plan include Tropical Cyclone Mark in January 1992 and Tropical Cyclone Ethel in March 1996, which made landfall west northwest of Weipa.

The Weipa local disaster management plan describes parts of the town as vulnerable to storm surge inundation and lists Trunding, Nanum, and Rocky Point and Golf Links as exposed to storm tide. It says storm surge mapping can be obtained from the Weipa Town Authority office.

Evacuation centers¶

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Authority describes the Weipa Storm Surge Shelter as a last resort option for residents at risk of storm surge who have no other shelter arrangements, intended as a short term option with only very basic amenities. Do not assume it is available. Follow instructions from the Weipa Town Authority and the Local Disaster Management Group.
