Litchfield Council cyclone guide

Litchfield Council covers the rural area south and east of Darwin, including Humpty Doo, Berry Springs, Howard Springs and Virginia, with its office at Freds Pass. The Council says that in a disaster it activates its Emergency Management Plan, which may close some facilities. It lists risks of cyclone wind, storm surge on low lying areas, flooding and tidal surges on creek crossings. Never cross a flooded creek or riverbed.

Litchfield Council says emergency shelters are a legacy of Cyclone Tracy and are for residents at risk from storm surge or living in caravan parks or non coded homes, and that animals are not permitted. It lists these emergency shelter locations: Berry Springs Primary School, 1150 Cox Peninsula Road, Berry Springs; Girraween Primary School, Carruth Road, Girraween; and Taminmin College, Challoner Circuit, Humpty Doo. A shelter is open only when officials announce it. Check SecureNT and the NT Emergency Service.
