Middlesex County hurricane guide

The Middlesex County Department of Emergency Services, led by the Emergency Services Coordinator, helps residents prepare for disasters and coordinates the county's response. The county says it has about 30 first responders for roughly 10,000 residents, so in a major disaster people may need to fend for themselves for some time. Middlesex lies between the Rappahannock and Piankatank rivers on the Middle Peninsula and is in Virginia's Know Your Zone system.

Evacuation zones

Middlesex County is in Virginia's Know Your Zone system, which uses zones A to D. Enter your street address on the state lookup to see your zone. The county pages checked do not describe zone areas or evacuation routes, so wait for orders through the county's alerts and local media. The state says mobile homes are vulnerable to high wind and advises people in them to leave in serious storms even outside a zone.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Middlesex County pages checked do not list hurricane shelters. If the county opens a shelter, expect it to be announced through its Everbridge alerts and local media. Do not go anywhere until it is announced. Call the Department of Emergency Services at 804-758-4330 to ask about plans.

Cities and towns

Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
