Wicomico County hurricane guide¶
The Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services runs 9-1-1, radio, and emergency management for a county around Salisbury and the Wicomico and Nanticoke rivers. Wicomico takes part in Maryland's Know Your Zone evacuation zones and publishes its own tropical storm and hurricane evacuation zone map and an address lookup. The county says to shelter with friends, family, or a hotel outside the evacuation area and to use a public shelter only as a last resort.

Evacuation zones¶
Maryland uses statewide Know Your Zone evacuation zones lettered A, B, and C. In a severe storm, residents of one or more zones may be told to evacuate depending on tides, storm intensity, path, and other factors, and the order names the zone. Look up your address on the state map. Residents not in a zone should be ready to evacuate if conditions change and should call their local emergency management office with questions. If the map will not load, the state says to call 2-1-1 or your local emergency manager. Wicomico County also publishes its own tropical storm and hurricane evacuation zone map and an interactive address lookup. The county says you can also call 2-1-1 to find out whether your area is an evacuation area.
Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
Wicomico County says people who evacuate should first seek shelter with friends, family, or at a hotel or motel outside the evacuation area, and use a public shelter as a last resort. The county Department of Social Services leads shelter operations, and the DES director picks sites by hazard, so no permanent sites are established. Locations, times, and what to bring are announced through local government and the news media. Do not go to a site until it is announced.
