Rockwall County hurricane guide

The Rockwall County Office of Emergency Management works to preserve life and property and to help the county recover from disasters, and the National Weather Service recognizes Rockwall County as StormReady. The county is inland, and the remains of a tropical storm can bring heavy rain and flash flooding. The county says to turn around, don't drown, when a flash flood warning is issued.

What to know in Rockwall County

  • The county says it only takes 6 inches of fast-moving floodwater to knock over an adult and 2 feet to carry away most vehicles, including pickups and SUVs. When a flash flood warning is issued, turn around, don't drown.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Rockwall County does not publish a list of shelters. In an emergency, check Nixle alerts and call the Office of Emergency Management to ask about shelter, and do not go to a building unless officials say it is open. The county also offers guidance on deciding between evacuating and sheltering in place.

Help to evacuate

  • State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR): During a power, water, or gas outage lasting over 24 hours or a declared disaster, the county sends an automated text and call to people on the registry. Read the county's page to learn how to register. Website.

Cities and towns

Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
