Braxton County hurricane guide

Braxton County Emergency Management works with the Braxton County 911 Center in Sutton. Braxton County is inland, with the Elk River and its creeks, so heavy rain, including rain from the remains of tropical storms, can bring flash flooding and river flooding. The county 911 page offers a CodeRED alert signup and a floodplain permit download.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Braxton County does not publish a standing list of storm shelters that we could confirm. Shelters open only when officials announce them, so do not go to a site until it is announced as open. Check county alerts and local news for announcements.

Cities and towns

Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
