What to know in Rockingham County

  • The county's hurricane page says hurricanes need not make landfall or move directly across Virginia to cause great damage, and it describes fast-moving inland storms of the past that kept hurricane force winds after making landfall. It says more people are killed by freshwater floods than by wind.
  • The county's flood page says even a very small stream or dry creek bed can overflow. If your vehicle becomes surrounded by rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground, and do not drive into flooded areas.
