Schenectady County hurricane guide

The Schenectady County Emergency Management Office, in Princetown, handles emergency management for the county. In past flood notices the county told residents near the Mohawk River or in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and to stay away from rivers and streams during a flood watch. In a past storm notice it warned of possible flash flooding in poor drainage areas and winds over 40 MPH, and asked residents to clear drains, secure outdoor items, charge devices, and keep supplies for at least 72 hours. Sign up for SMART911 alerts and dial 911 for emergencies.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Schenectady County does not publish a standing list of hurricane shelters on the pages we checked. The county's Emergency Management Office page offers SMART911 alerts, and its past storm notices point residents to the National Weather Service and local news. Check county alerts to find out what is open during an emergency, and dial 911 for emergencies.
