Southampton County hurricane guide

Southampton County's Emergency Management Coordinator runs the county's emergency management program and works with the Southampton County Fire and Rescue Association. This is an inland southeast Virginia county, so the main tropical storm risks are flooding from heavy rain, wind, and power outages. The county sends emergency alerts through Regroup, run by the Sheriff's Office, so sign up before a storm. For flood maps and floodplain rules, contact the Department of Community Development.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Southampton County pages checked do not list hurricane shelters. If the county opens a shelter for a storm, expect it to be announced through the county's emergency alerts. Do not go anywhere until it is announced. Call the emergency management office at 757-742-6760 on a weekday to ask what the county plans.
