Laredo hurricane guide

Laredo is the largest city in Webb County, on the Rio Grande at the U.S.-Mexico border. It is far inland, but tropical storms can bring heavy rain, flash flooding in flood-prone areas, and strong winds, and the mayor has declared local disasters and emergency advisories for storms such as Alberto and Beryl in 2024. The city runs its own Emergency Operations Center, police and fire departments, 311 center, water and sewer utility, and solid waste service.

What to know in Laredo

  • When a storm threatens, the mayor can issue an emergency advisory. Before Hurricane Beryl in 2024, the advisory asked all residents to stay home and indoors if the storm arrived, and to get updates from the City of Laredo and local news.
  • Before Hurricane Beryl in 2024, the city handed out sandbags at the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library parking lot, 1120 E. Calton Road, and asked people to take them only once. Watch city news and alerts for any sandbag announcement.
  • Laredo has hosted people evacuating the Texas coast. In 2024 the city's Emergency Operations Center prepared shelters for coastal evacuees at the request of the Texas Division of Emergency Management. Shelters for evacuees are announced for each storm.
