Evacuation zones¶
Suffolk uses Virginia's Know Your Zone evacuation zones A through D. The city says evacuation orders are intended for those living or working in harm's way and to relocate with someone outside the danger zone or to a city disaster shelter. The city tells residents to follow the routes on the state hurricane evacuation map and not to wait until the last minute.
Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
Suffolk lists three primary disaster shelters and says 11 more can be used as needed. Listing does not mean a shelter is open; the city announces shelters through its alerts. Shelters are ADA compliant. Kings Fork High School is fully generator powered and is advised for people who depend on electricity for medical needs. Nansemond River High School is the pet friendly shelter for dogs and cats, with proof of a current rabies certificate. Pets are not allowed at the other shelters except assistance dogs. Sign in on arrival, and weapons, alcohol, drugs, and smoking are prohibited.
