City of Poquoson hurricane guide¶
The City of Poquoson Emergency Management office, run through the fire department, plans for hurricanes and flooding. Poquoson is a low-lying peninsula where tidal flooding and storm surge are the main risks. The city says to know your evacuation zone, follow evacuation orders, and never drive through floodwater.

Evacuation zones¶
Poquoson takes part in Virginia's Know Your Zone program, which uses zones A through D. The city's hurricane page tells residents to know their evacuation zone and to check with the city emergency office for evacuation routes. Look up your zone with the state tool and call the city if you need help.
Evacuation centers¶
Open only when announced
Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.
The city says emergency shelters are assigned by York County at the appropriate time, so stay tuned to local media and city alerts. Do not go to a shelter until it is announced as open. The city says pets, alcohol, and firearms are not allowed in shelters, so make arrangements for pets. Residents with special needs should contact local agencies ahead of time to identify the best temporary shelter.
