Madison County hurricane guide

The Madison County Department of Emergency Management is run by a part-time director who coordinates emergency services and reports to the County Administrator. Madison is an inland Blue Ridge Piedmont county, so the main tropical storm risks are heavy rain, flooding of streams and low roads, wind, and power outages. The county sends alerts through Hyper-Reach and points residents to the Emergency Management Facebook page and the Ready Virginia app for preparedness and weather information.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Madison County pages checked do not list hurricane shelters. If the county opens a shelter for a storm, expect it to be announced through Hyper-Reach alerts and the county Emergency Management page. Do not go anywhere until it is announced. Call 540-948-7500 on a weekday to ask what the county plans.

Cities and towns

Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
