City of Colonial Heights hurricane guide

The City of Colonial Heights Office of Emergency Management, part of Fire, EMS and Emergency Management, plans for and coordinates responses to natural disasters and other emergencies and runs the city's CERT program. Colonial Heights is an independent city on the Appomattox River south of Richmond, so the main tropical storm risks are heavy rain, flash and creek flooding, wind, and power outages. The city sounds three sirens for immediate danger such as a tornado warning, and sends emergency messages through CivicReady, so sign up before a storm.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

The Colonial Heights pages checked do not list hurricane shelters. If the city opens a shelter for a storm, expect it to be announced through CivicReady alerts and local media. Do not go anywhere until it is announced. If you hear the city sirens, seek shelter and tune to local radio, television, or cable for information. The sirens are tested on the first Saturday of each month at noon.
